Tim Hanwell and Juliet Hanwell studied at the British School of Osteopathy for four years, in the early 1990’s and then spent three years working as associates in numerous practices both in England and New Zealand.
Berkhamsted Osteopaths was established in 1997 bringing together Juliet’s six years nursing, (prior to studying osteopathy), with their osteopathic experiences, including six years working at the BBC as the on-site osteopaths and Tim's ongoing position as the osteopath at The London School of Economics.
Since opening in March 1997 good relationships have been established with local G.P.s, orthopaedic consultants, midwives and other local therapists enabling patient referral to and from other practitioners.
Our treatment is covered by BUPA, AXAPPP, AVIVA, Simply Health, Cigna, Medisure, WPA, HSA and all other major insurance companies. A G.P. referral is only necessary if the patient intends to claim the cost of treatment through a private medical insurance company otherwise please call the practice on 01442 878900.
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a natural therapy which has been practiced for over 100 years. It is a system of diagnosis and treatment that focuses on structural and mechanical problems of the body and is most concerned with the body framework and how it is functioning.

What is cranial Osteopathy?
A cranial osteopath will use manual techniques to bring about profound changes within the child’s body through gentle manipulation. This will allow the different body systems nervous system, immune system, muscular system and circulatory system to work effectively and optimally. The treatment uses no drugs and is non-invasive.
Do you treat pregnant patients?
Yes, osteopathy is a safe and effective way of treating patients who cannot take medications and therefore is ideal for treating pregnant women.
Do you prescribe any medications?
No, osteopaths are not able to prescribe medications but we may be able give advice regarding natural remedies or appropriate over the counter medications.
